Keep these things in mind when choosing cabinetry

Kitchen cabinets are the very cornerstone of that room. So choose appliances first to ensure the cupboards fit correctly, and then all else follows the cabinets. In a perfect world, everything would be done simultaneously, but you need to consider your layout and be sure all measurements work together. Here are some other things to consider when shopping for your home's cabinets in Charlotte, NC.

Shouldn’t I install the floor before the cabinets?

There are two schools of thought on this, but many will want the cabinets to go in first. Here's why: Often, there'll be height issues that will keep doors from opening and closing correctly. However, the big thing to remember is that appliances are usually attached to the subfloor and, with height issues, they may become "trapped." That means when it's time to replace them, you may need to cut away part of the floor to get to them.

Other things to think about include:

  1. Color: Cherry is always a favorite. It has an old-world style with a rich, dark finish that works well in rustic and traditional decors. If you’d like a more modern look, change the hardware and use lacquer to provide a sleek finish.
  2. Textured looks, such as raised grains, wire-brushing, or hand scraping, are currently hot as people move toward a more natural look. Texturing adds character and design interest to the kitchen cabinet and can be quickly done with faux finishes or paint.
  3. Make sure you have fully adjustable door hardware so the installer can adjust any gaps. If you're planning to install lighting under the cabinets, be sure to ask for the proper recessing.
  4. Keep in mind that you can still have luxury without fully customized cupboards. Choose semi-stock; although these are factory mass-produced, there is room to make adjustments.
  5. Think about that dead space that’s always in the back of a cabinet. A good solution is to install a Lazy Susan or pie-cut, pull-out corner cabinet.

Don’t forget about bathroom cabinets

The bath might be a small one, but it does play a significant part in setting the tone of your home. A cabinet can either be a sole unit with storage and drawers or a complete vanity, including the sink and counter space. If space is premium, get creative, such as choosing a cantilevered cabinet and sliding a pedestal sink underneath.
